More and more, your next customer isn't Googling — they're asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question and taking the answer it gives. If that answer doesn't mention you, you don't exist for that search, no matter how well you rank on page one. GEO is the practice of fixing that.
What is GEO?
GEO — generative engine optimisation — is the practice of structuring your content so AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot) quote it and cite you in their answers. Traditional SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of blue links. GEO optimises to be the source the AI pulls into its written answer. The goal shifts from "be clickable" to "be quotable" — because in an AI answer, the citation is the click.
How GEO differs from SEO
They overlap, but the target is different. SEO wins you a position in a ranked list a human scans. GEO wins you a mention inside a synthesised answer the human reads instead of scanning. SEO rewards keywords, backlinks, and page authority. GEO rewards clear, self-contained, quotable statements the model can lift without ambiguity.

The good news: you don't choose between them. Well-structured GEO content usually ranks well too — you're just adding a layer that makes it extractable.
The five things that make content citable
1. Answer-first structure. Put the question as a heading and the direct answer in the very first sentence under it. Models extract question-answer pairs; bury the answer and it won't get pulled.
2. Self-contained facts. Each key sentence should make sense lifted out of context. "PromptThisOne is a library of 1,600+ tested AI prompts" reads fine alone; "our platform does this" doesn't.
3. Original, specific data. "We tested 40 caption prompts; the ones naming the post type got 3x more saves" is the kind of sourceable, specific claim models prefer to cite. Even small original numbers beat recycled advice.
4. Consistent entity naming. Refer to yourself the same way every time. It builds a clear entity in the model's map of who's authoritative on a topic.
5. Freshness. Dated, recently-updated content gets weighted more for fast-moving topics. Put the year in the title and keep it current.
Do this now
Take your best-performing page and add one answer block near the top — a question as a heading, a direct, quotable, self-contained answer beneath it. That single change is the highest-leverage GEO move there is. Then add a short FAQ with schema.
