You wrote a caption. You're about to hit post. And there's that half-second of doubt — is this actually good, or am I about to send a "living my best life 🌸" into the void?

Most people push through that doubt and post anyway. Then the reel does nothing and they blame the algorithm. But the caption was fixable in thirty seconds — they just had no way to check it.

Here's the way. One ChatGPT prompt that reads your draft, scores it on the things that actually decide reach, and rewrites the weak parts. Paste your caption, get a better one back. Below is the prompt, plus the five-point checklist it runs on so you understand why it flags what it flags.

The caption checker prompt

Copy this, paste it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini, Grok — it works in all of them), then paste your caption underneath.

You are an Instagram strategist who knows what makes captions get saved and shared. I'll give you a caption. Score it from 1–10 on each of these five things: (1) Hook — does the first line stop the scroll? (2) Clarity — is it instantly clear what this post is about? (3) Value — is there a reason to save, share, or care? (4) Voice — does it sound like a real person, not a brand template? (5) CTA — is there one clear action? For each, give the score and one specific fix. Then rewrite the caption into 2 stronger versions. Here's my caption: [paste it]

That's the whole tool. But if you want to write better captions in the first place — not just fix them — here's what it's actually checking.

The 5 things that decide if a caption works

1. The hook

The first line has one job: earn the "…more" tap. Instagram truncates your caption, so if line one is "Had the best weekend," nobody expands it. A hook is a question, a bold claim, a number, or an unfinished thought that needs the next line to resolve. If the checker scores your hook low, it's because you opened with a diary entry instead of a reason to keep reading.

2. Clarity

If someone can't tell what your post is about in one second, they scroll. Clever beats clear only when clarity is already there. Captions that try to be mysterious usually just read as confusing.

3. Value (this is the one that earns the save)

Saves and shares are the strongest signals Instagram has — stronger than likes — because they mean the post was worth keeping or worth passing to a friend. So a caption needs a reason to be saved: it teaches something, says something quotable, or nails a feeling so precisely the reader sends it to someone. "Another great day" gives no reason. That's why it dies.

4. Voice

This is where AI-written and lazy captions both fail. If it sounds like a brand template — "Elevate your everyday ✨" — people feel the fakeness and keep scrolling. It has to sound like you, specifically. Slightly messy and human beats polished and generic every time.

5. The CTA

One clear next step. Save this. Comment your answer. Tap the link. One — not three competing asks that cancel each other out. No CTA at all and the caption can't convert the attention it earned.

How to read the score

If everything comes back 8+, post it. If one thing scores low, that's your single edit — usually the hook or the CTA, because those are the two people skip most. If three or more score low, don't polish it; take one of the two rewrites the prompt gives you and tweak a line so it's unmistakably yours. The rewrite is a starting point, not a final answer — the last 10% is your voice, and only you can add that.

Before and after

Before (scores ~4): Sunday reset done ✨ Feeling grateful for the little things 🤍

No hook (it's a diary line), no value (nothing to save), vague CTA (none). The checker would flag all three.

After (scores ~8): The Sunday reset that actually makes Monday easier 👇 Three things I do every week — save this and try one. Which would you start with?

Hook promises a payoff, the value is a save-worthy tip, and the CTA invites a reply. Same Sunday, completely different reach.

Do this now

Next time you're hovering over the post button with that half-second of doubt — don't push through it. Copy the checker prompt above, paste your caption, take thirty seconds. Post the version that scored, not the one you second-guessed.
